•1979 - Evolution of BSD UNIX

•Developed by Linus Benedict Torvalds

•Releases ‘Linux’ under GPL

•Linux is just the kernel and not the entire system - GNU/Linux

•Linux ¹ RedHat, RedHat = Linux
